An excellent experiment in testing a neighbourhood’s mettle for self-maintained edible landscaping, tree planters provide compact growing zones for small plant arrangements like; Mediterranean herb gardens, rhubarb, strawberry, and sweet woodruff. A variation on this typology utilises the planter space as a temporary plant nursery where cuttings and the pruned twigs of berry bushes can sprout roots before being planted out elsewhere in the neighbourhood. Planted with nectar-rich flowers, tree planter mini-gardens are signposts for enclosed project locations, and even signal nectar corridors for pollinating insects between the public space orchard locations.
